IRU Team
Our Rehabilitation team consists of highly skilled professionals dedicated to each patient's needs. We work together to develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient.
Physiatrists:
Physiatrists are doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They diagnoses the patient’s condition and lead the team in creating a plan to restore function, decrease pain and improve the quality of life after an illness or injury
• Board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists
• Daily access to Medical Director (physician) of the Inpatient Rehabilitation program
• Access to Physicians in other specialties and subspecialties
Rehabilitation nurses:
Rehabilitation nurses manage the patient's overall health and provide skilled care around the clock. They help patients learn about their medications, their disease or injury, or how to manage bowel, bladder, and skin care needs
• Certified Rehabilitation Nurses (CRRN)
• Provide 24-hour Specialized Rehabilitation Nursing care
• Educate, teach, coach, and advocate for patients and caregivers
• Reinforce what is learned in therapy
Physical therapist:
Physical therapists help and treat patients with a disease or injury contributing to pain or loss of strength, range of motion, balance or coordination. Their goal is to restore and maintain a person’s ability to move and do physical tasks
- Help patients improve functional mobility
- Treat musculoskeletal and neurological problems
- Focus on strength, endurance, range of motion, gait, body mechanics, and pain control
- Possess knowledge of special equipment if needed (wheelchair, walker, cane, etc…)
- Care for amputees and provide prosthetic training
Occupational therapist:
Occupational therapists assess how well a patient can do daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, and bathing. Their goal is to help the patient do as much independently as possible. They help with a person’s ability to participate in their life roles
- Help patients regain skills needed for increasing independence with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's)
- Focus on improving strength, coordination, and sensation to increase daily function
- Build on skills needed to return to home, work, and community
- Determine adaptations or special equipment required for independence in ADL's (bathing, dressing, cooking, etc.)
Speech-language therapist:
Speech-language therapists treat patients who have problems with speech and thinking skills. These problems are common among those who have had a stroke, head injury, or other changes in their nervous system. Speech-language therapists also work with patients who have difficulty swallowing
- Evaluate and treat patients to overcome swallowing disorders, speech, language, or communication problems
- Teach ways to improve memory, problem solve, understand written and spoken words, express wants and needs
- Assist patients with increasing insight, understanding, and thinking for daily coping
Social worker:
Social workers serve as the coordinator of care for the patient. They provide emotional support to help patients deal with the onset of an illness or injury. They assist with community resources such as transportation, in-home therapy, and nursing support, nutrition programs, and insurance issues. They also help facilitate referrals for post-discharge rehabilitation care
- Counsel patients and families, assist with adjusting to new situations
- Plan for discharge and set up services needed after discharge (home health, outpatient services, etc…)
- Coordinate and assist with questions regarding insurance and financial concerns
Support system:
Your support system consists of family, friends, and significant others. They play an active role in the rehabilitation process. They are encouraged to attend education and training sessions to help prepare each patient for their discharge
The Patient:
The patient is the most important part of the rehabilitation team. The success of the rehabilitation program depends on their active involvement in the treatment sessions and the important decisions they make along with the interdisciplinary team
